Massa Marittima
One of the best preserved medieval villages in Italy, on the fourth Sunday of May and the second Sunday of August every year, the town dives into its past. This is the time of the Balestro del Girifalco, an ancient contest between the crossbowmen of the Massa Marittima neighbourhoods, preceded by a traditional parade and flag throwers. Throughout the year, the wonderful central square in front of Saint Cerbonius Cathedral and the main buildings of the Medieval commune era is the scene of excellent exhibitions, concerts and events, and the narrow streets that run inside the walls of Massa Marittima are the ideal place for an evening stroll.
